CSX Transportation (CSXT) customers can now go to
CSX.com to get interline prices for many general merchandise carload shipments, as part of an industry technology initiative focused on making that process more efficient and useful.
Currently, interline prices are available for general merchandise carload shipments originating on CSXT and some Shortline partners, with destinations on Canadian National (CN) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). Prices for destinations on the Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific will be included over the next few months.
CSXT's on-line price look-up tool now offers prices for interline shipments (shipments that begin on CSXT and end on another railroad). This complements the local prices CSX.com has long made available to customers for local moves (shipments that begin and end on CSXT).
By simply entering the criteria for an interline shipment, customers receive interline prices made from a combination of each railroad's independently established price for its portion of the shipment.
Instantaneous interline pricing quickly gives customers the information needed to make sound transportation decisions. When a customer finds a price to use, the customer simply clicks to accept the price, which will then become valid for up to a year.
"Our customers have told us they need more timely price quotes for interline shipments," said Clarence Gooden, executive vice president and CSX chief commercial officer. "Working together on this important industry initiative, we have added interline prices to our expanding web-based menu that is designed to make us easier to do business with."
The price look-up tool is available on
CSX.com, under
Get a Price, and on CSX's secure transaction site, ShipCSX.
The process that delivers interline prices, A+B Pricing, was jointly developed by CSXT and CN to create prices in real time, eliminating delays in responding to customer inquiries for interline prices.
"This was not something that one railroad could accomplish alone," said John Couch, director of market strategy. "This is an example of what we as an industry can do to better meet our customers' needs and make railroads more competitive with other transportation modes."
