We organize our ESG strategy under Service with Purpose, our Sustainability, and Social Impact platform grounded in four key pillars: Safety, Service, Environmental Sustainability, and Stewardship. This framework reflects how we manage and respond to the most material ESG issues impacting our business and stakeholders, including workforce safety, customer service, climate risk, and ethical governance. These pillars align with our long-term value creation model, guiding how we invest in people, infrastructure, and innovation to meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s opportunities.

We take this approach because rail is the most fuel-efficient mode of freight transportation on land, and delivering sustainable solutions – from operations and fleet modernization to customer-focused innovations – is essential to driving progress. Our efforts have helped customers avoid more than 10 million tons of CO₂ emissions in 2024 alone, and we continue to lead with technologies like hydrogen locomotives, biodiesel adoption, and advanced trip optimization. These strategies are further unpacked in our report through our Climate Transition Plan, low-carbon technology investments, and value chain engagement, reflecting our commitment to moving the industry forward responsibly.
  • CSX is deeply committed to making a positive impact in the communities we serve, exemplifying a dedication to social responsibility that extends well beyond its rail operations. Service is and has always been part of our DNA. Through our Safety, Service and Environmental Sustainability pillars, we invest in workforce well-being, frontline training, and community resilience across our 26-state network. From the ONE CSX Academy to disaster response and safety mentorships, our people are empowered to lead with purpose. Our signature initiative, CSX Pride in Service, supports military members, veterans, and first responders – groups closely tied to our workforce and the communities along our routes. In partnership with national nonprofits, we deliver targeted support where and when it’s needed. In 2024, CSX employees contributed over 24,000 volunteer hours, backed by matching gifts and local partnerships. Whether through service or investment, we are building stronger, more connected communities – together as ONE CSX.
  • At CSX, strong governance is the foundation for delivering long-term, sustainable value. Through our Stewardship pillar, we manage material governance issues – including ethical conduct, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance and stakeholder engagement – with transparency and accountability at every level. In 2024, we advanced ESG oversight through our Board and executive leadership, completed 100% ethics training for management employees, and implemented 92% of TSA-mandated cybersecurity controls. We also met with over 250 institutional investors, reinforcing our commitment to open, proactive engagement. Guided by a culture of responsible leadership, CSX is building a resilient business that earns trust and drives value from the inside out.
