Who:
|
|
CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the nation’s
leading transportation companies, connecting customers to ports,
distribution centers and markets across the eastern United States.
Through grass-roots volunteerism and focused corporate giving, CSX
is committed to supporting the communities where it operates. City
Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization founded in 1988
that partners with public schools to help keep students in school
and on track to graduate. In 23 communities across the United States
and through two international affiliates, this innovative
public-private partnership brings together teams of young AmeriCorps
members who commit to a year of full-time service in schools. Corps
members support students by focusing on attendance, behavior, and
course performance through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after
school programs. Alliance for Community Trees (ACTrees) is a
national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health
and livability of cities by planting and caring for trees. With over
200 member organizations in 44 states and Canada, ACTrees engages
volunteers to take action to improve the environment where 93% of
people live: in cities, towns, and metropolitan areas. Together,
ACTrees member organizations have planted and cared for over 15
million trees with help from over 5 million volunteers. The vision
of the Jacksonville Port Authority is to be a major economic engine
for Northeast Florida by continuing to be a premier diversified port
in the Southeastern United States with connections to major trade
lanes throughout the world. Greenscape of Jacksonville is a
nonprofit organization founded in 1975 with the mission of enhancing
Jacksonville through the planting, protection, and promotion of
trees. Since that time, Greenscape is credited with adding over
300,000 trees to the Jacksonville tree canopy.

Why:
|
|
This service day was a collaboration between CSX and JAXPORT, two
key area businesses that support the United Way Achiever’s for
Life Program of which Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School is a
participant. Achiever’s for Life works with local businesses to
match mentors and advocates with students at risk of dropping out.
In addition to engaging in volunteer service for the school, in
2010, CSX leadership packed and donated much-needed school
supplies to the entire student body and its teachers.

How:
|
|
“Trees for Tracks” is CSX’s commitment to plant 21,000 trees, one
for every mile of track, over the next five years, in the areas most
in need of green. CSX is listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability
Index for its achievements in environmental performance, including
reaching ahead of schedule the company's voluntary goal of reducing
greenhouse gas emissions by eight percent and its tree planting
initiative.
