Who:

CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the nation’s leading transportation companies, connecting customers to ports, distribution centers and markets across the eastern United States. Through grass-roots volunteerism and focused corporate giving, CSX is committed to supporting the communities where it operates. City Year’s mission is to build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership and social entrepreneurship. It is through service that we can demonstrate the power and idealism of young people, engage citizens to benefit the common good, and develop young leaders of the next generation.

When:

8:00 am – 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 24, 2012

Where:

National Safe Place at 2411 Bowman Avenue

Why:

The National Safe Place of Louisville is an affiliate of the YMCA of Greater Louisville and part of a national youth outreach program that educates thousands of young people every year about the dangers of running away or trying to resolve difficult, threatening situations on their own. This easily replicated initiative involves the whole community in an effort to provide safe havens and resources for youth in crisis.

How:

Since 2007, CSX has been a sponsor of National Safe Place. In addition to the upcoming service day in Louisville, CSX has provided grants, and employees have provided donations and volunteer support to multiple chapters. The Louisville event takes place as part of the annual National Safe Place Week, recognizing the thousands of businesses, schools, fire departments, law enforcement and volunteers who work hard to keep communities safer for young people. This year National Safe Place will launch TXT 4 HELP Interactive, a 24-hour text-for-support service that allows youth in crisis to communicate directly with a mental health professional.
